This painting is my version of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.
The woman fastens the Navarathnam earring that once belonged to her mother who inherited it from her mother. An heirloom, carefully handcrafted by the family's most trusted jeweler under her grandfather's watchful eyes. She ties her headscarf fashioned from her grandfather's silk veshti stitched onto her grandmother's sari and as the woman stares into the mirror, she sees little parts of everyone she holds dear woven into her very being.
